About Dr. Jackie Wheeler (SHE/HER)
“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field…I’ll meet you there.” – Rumi
When we can feel safe enough to become curious about ourselves in a space where notions of good or bad and right or wrong are set aside, we can learn a lot about who we are and how we relate to others and the world at large. This learning makes meaningful change possible!
I take an active and collaborative approach to help patients move through their difficulties, figure out what matters most to them, identify where they may be stuck, and take steps towards living healthier, fuller lives. I believe we cannot fully understand an individual without understanding their environments and identities; therefore, I try to get to know the “whole person” and always consider the multidimensional aspects of diversity in our work.
I adopt a primarily psychodynamic approach in my work but integrate other treatment modalities, as needed. Because of my background and training in health psychology, neuropsychology, and trauma, the mind-body connection informs how I understand and treat many of our struggles.
During my 10 years in the field of psychology, I have developed the ability to help with a variety of life circumstances, including:
-
- Trauma and attachment difficulties
- Depression and anxiety
- Complex grief
- Eating disorders
- Medical concerns including chronic pain/illness
- Therapy for medical professionals and therapists
- Parenting and the concerns of new mothers
- Family difficulties including in-law relationships and blended families
- Young adults struggling with identity, career, and relationships
I earned a Doctor of Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) degree from Pepperdine’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology and my work and training experiences have included positions at: Wright Institute Los Angeles, UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System (Depts. Of Neuropsychology and Health Psychology), Pepperdine West LA Community Mental Health Clinic, PEaCE Research Lab for Promotion of Wellness and Community, Trauma and Military Research Lab, and a variety of other volunteer experiences working with children, adolescents, and adults.
I invite you to reach out to me by phone or email to set up a consultation.
